Important changes to EMA
On Monday 28 March, the Government announced a new £180 million bursary scheme to help the most vulnerable 16-19 year olds continue in full-time education. They also confirmed that EMA support will continue for Year 2 and Year 3 students who were on £30 a per week in 2010-11. In 2011-12, these students will now be eligible for £20 per week. There will be no EMA for students who are currently receiving £20 or £10 per week in 2011-12.
There will be guaranteed bursaries of £1,200 per year for the most vulnerable 16-19 year olds, this includes Young People in care, Care leavers, as well as young people who receive income support.
In addition to the guaranteed bursaries, there will be a limited hardship fund managed by the college. This fund will be used to help students pay for indirect course costs such as travel, trips and equipment.
There is an 8 week consultation on the proposals, ending on 20 May 2011, which can be found here: http://www.education.gov.uk/consultations/index.cfm?action=consultationDetails&consultationId=1754&external=no&menu=1.
