Gaining Skills for Life

If you didn’t get on well at school, you may find it hard to get a rewarding job and a decent wage.

Good English and Maths skills can greatly improve your employment chances and other areas of your life too, so if you need help with your numeracy and literacy skills, talk to us.

Adults can study Skills for Life English and Maths courses for free at SCCH, so don't miss out on the opportunity to develop your skills and gain a nationally recognised qualification.

Whether you want to bag a qualification, or progress onto further training courses, learning can be extremely rewarding.  In fact, reports show that adults who study have improved health, wealth and confidence.

Some adults worry about returning to education, especially if they didn’t enjoy school…but studying at college is very different from school.

Firstly, adults attend college through choice, not because they have to.
Secondly, college teachers are there to support students, not to monitor behaviour.
Thirdly, Skills for Life courses allow students to work at their own speed, in their own way.

Skills for Life courses in English and Maths are free for adults over the age of 19 (and can sometimes be available if you are 16-18).  Adults of all ages and from all backgrounds study Skills for Life at SCCH.

After an initial assessment, students are placed onto the right course(s) to suit their needs.

So, why not talk to us about Skills for Life and discover the confidence that comes from learning new skills.

CASE STUDY
Name: Angela Mitchell
Age: 43
Course: Skills for Life Literacy and Numeracy, and Pre-Access.
Background: My potential was missed at school as I am dyslexic and they weren’t very good at spotting the signs back then, so I was dismissed as being not very able.  Therefore I left school with no Maths or English qualifications.
I went on to work in farming for many years.  However, the farms where I worked gradually closed down, and as my children are now at school I thought it was time to change direction and get some qualifications behind me.
What I’m doing now:  I have been studying Skills for Life Maths and English since September and have passed the level 1 and 2 exams in both, which gives me the adult equivalent of GCSEs.  I have also taken the pre-access course, which helps to prepare me for Higher Education.  I want to study Physiotherapy.
The best thing about studying on this course is that I can work at my own pace.  I’m not pushed to keep up with others, like at school.  I can take my exams when I’m ready.  It’s tailored to suit individual people.
