Are you passionate about sports and want to pursue a career that allows you to bring the benefit of prevention and management of injuries to other people? This course is focused towards learners seeking to gain a vocationally related qualification in the context of prevention and management of sports injuries. Topics covered include sports massage, health and fitness testing, basic taping and strapping, the application of hot and cold techniques and emergency first aid. Learners will also develop the requisite knowledge and understanding of anatomy and physiology, nutrition, sports injuries and their rehabilitation to support the practical skills they require. Successful students gain a Health and Safety Executive (HSE) and Emergency First Aid at Work certificate (EFAW), which is valid for three years.

What do I need?

Sports ability and four/five grades A*-C at GCSE including Mathematics and English or an appropriate Level 2 qualification.

How will I be assessed?

Through instruction and ongoing assessment, both practical and theory, directed assignments, research and supported individual study. There will also be a multiple choice exam paper to sit.

What will I learn?

Practical skills plus anatomy and physiology, nutrition, sports injuries and rehabilitation.

What are my career opportunities?

Successful students are eligible for registration as A level 3 sport massage practitioner with the Sports Massage Association, and will be equipped to work in an unsupervised capacity.

Further Study?

Progression on to A level 4 qualification (e.g. Level 4 Certificate in Sports Massage Therapy), or to university to study a range of sport-related disciplines.

Are there any extra costs?

Uniform (approx. £50), plus contribution towards trips and visits (approx. £60).
