PDF

Course code: 1382
Course type: Full time
Duration: 2 years*
Level: 3
Site: Station Plaza
Start date: September 2012

Many of us have asked philosophical questions without giving a name to them: what do we mean by the ‘right’ thing to do? Where does evil come from? Why do people suffer? Does the universe show evidence of design? Philosophy is the reasoning of the enquiring mind through logical and critical argument: the pursuit of knowledge as a means to gain insight into our lives. If you’re interested in such questions and want to enhance your analytical and communication skills, A level Philosophy is for you. You will gain a thorough grounding in key concepts and themes that will enable you to engage with the great philosophers’ arguments – arguments that have shaped our world. The range of topics you study will include reason and experience, the idea of God, knowledge of the external world, and God and the world.

How will I be assessed?

Formal and informal ongoing assessments, such as one-to-ones, essay feedback and mock exams.

What will I learn?

Philosophical concepts via group work, individual assignments and research projects.

What are my career opportunities?

An A level in Philosophy is evidence that you have developed the ability to reason, form your own judgements and present your viewpoint in a considered manner. Philosophy is a highly regarded academic route that can lead to careers such as journalism, law, education and politics.

Further Study?

Progress to university, followed by a career requiring analytical and evaluative skills, e.g. journalism, law, education
or government.
