A Level Biology

PDF

Course code: 1343
Course type: Full time
Duration: 2 years*
Level: 3
Site: Station Plaza
Start date: September 2012

Biology is the scientific study of living organisms, an exploration that has developed over the past few decades to reveal a dazzling wealth of knowledge about ourselves and the millions of other organisms on Earth. Many of the challenges facing us in the 21st century can be overcome through biological study: saving threatened species, curing deadly diseases and feeding an ever-growing population. A level Biology will enable you to investigate living organisms and the environments and ecosystems they occupy. Your studies will encompass everything from cells, molecules and enzymes to genes and genetic coding, physiology, energy, evolution, ecological diversity, microbes and diseases – as well as the social and ethical ‘real-life’ context of each area of study. You will also develop practical and investigative skills based on scientists’ work in current research contexts.

How will I be assessed?

Through regular assessment and regular feedback, along with one-to-one meetings with your subject tutor.

What will I learn?

All learning styles will be addressed through a combination of teacher presentation, self-directed study and practical work.

What are my career opportunities?

Biology can open the doors to many careers and is often a good ‘link subject’ between science and arts subjects. Some careers in which further study in biology will be an advantage are: Forensic Scientist,  Conservation Biologist, Toxicologist, Geneticist, Environmental consultant, Zoologist and Marine biologist.

Further Study?

Higher Education and then your career: e.g. medicine, physiotherapy, pharmacy, zoology, veterinary science, conservation, environmental health, horticulture, consultancy.

Are there any extra costs?

No.
