What is the most powerful thing you have at your disposal? Your language. If you want to understand how language is used and how it shapes the world around us, this is the subject for you. The course examines the key constituents of the English language and how they contribute to meaning. Through textual analysis and your own creative responses, you will consider the purposes of writing, contextual factors and stylistic features. You’ll also have the opportunity to explore spoken language and the impact of new technologies. You will consider how gender and culture influence our verbal interaction, and how the English language is constantly in flux – with words and phrases slipping in and out of usage all the time. The course will equip you with the skills of close analysis and the ability to read beyond surface meanings.
