Training for mechanics has gone full throttle since the College’s Motor Vehicle Training Centre opened in summer 2010. The Training Centre, based in Bexhill, is run as a working garage and provides hands-on training in car maintenance and repairs. The Level 1 Diploma in Light Vehicle Maintenance provides the essential knowledge for mechanics and covers the basic technical requirements for today’s light vehicle repair and maintenance industry, with a good mix of practical and theory. Topics include vehicle construction and routine maintenance, operating principles of engines, tyres, brakes, steering and suspension systems, transmission systems and electrical and electronic systems. The course also ensures that you have the right standard of Maths, English and ICT that are crucial to do well in the workplace.

What do I need?

A mixture of GSCEs grades E to G. Satisfactory completion of your existing studies.

How will I be assessed?

Assessment is by short computer-based tests and practical assessment of tasks.

What will I learn?

You will gain a good grasp of what is required in today’s modern motor vehicle workshops.

What are my career opportunities?

Successful students go on to an apprenticeship or employment as a trainee mechanic.
