PDF

Course code: 2628
Course type: Full time
Duration: 1 year
Level: 2
Site: Ore Valley
Start date: September 2012

Carpenters’ skills are much in demand, from construction of supporting frames for buildings to fitting doors and window frames, ceilings and staircases.  If you’re physically fit, have good hand-eye coordination and a head for maths, you are likely to do well as a carpenter. The industry-recognised level 2 Diploma in Site Carpentry comprises about 60% practical work at our simulated construction site facilities, and covers topics including building methods and construction technology, first and second fixing operations, structural carcassing, maintenance, and constructing a timber frame entrance. The course was designed in consultation with the construction sector, and includes much hands-on learning as well as ensuring that your Maths, English and ICT skills are up to scratch.

What do I need?

Grade C in English and Maths and a mixture of grade Ds and Es or relevant Level 1 qualification.

How will I be assessed?

You will be assessed continually throughout your course. Constructive feedback from your tutor will help you to improve and progress towards recognised industrial standards.

What will I learn?

To approach and carry out a range of first and second fixing tasks, from fixing roof timbers to hanging doors.

What are my career opportunities?

Various employment opportunities including the more site-based construction process through to the factory pre-fabricated buildings. The common element in both of these is the use of timber, a recognised sustainable material which is likely to be used in construction for the foreseeable future.

Further Study?

Further studies either through work-based qualifications and apprenticeships or progress to the level 3 Diploma.

Are there any extra costs?

Yes, for personal protective equipment and writing/drawing materials.
