ILEX Legal Secretaries Certificate

PDF

Course code: 2193
Course type: Full time
Duration: 1 year
Level: 2
Site: Station Plaza
Start date: September 2012

Legal secretaries provide secretarial and administrative support for the legal profession – in solicitors’ and barristers’ offices, in the legal departments of large organisations and in the law courts. If you enjoy working to deadlines and have a keen interest in a career in the legal world, the ILEX Legal Secretaries Certificate is the ideal first step. You will train in keyboard skills and use the latest dictation software to learn audio word processing for legal documents and correspondence. You will also explore how the legal system works, and the roles of different legal departments, the courts and their offices. An attention to detail and the ability to produce accurate work are essential, together with good written skills and a willingness to follow exact instructions for the layout of your work.

What do I need?

Grade C in English and a mixture of grade Ds or a relevant Level 1 qualification.
Satisfactory completion of your existing studies.

How will I be assessed?

Assessment is by way of a proof-reading exam and timed assignments for legal business communications, audio and word processing.

What will I learn?

Introduction to law, keyboards, audio, word processing and the legal system.

What are my career opportunities?

Several successful students go straight into employment as a junior legal secretary.

Are there any extra costs?

A fee of £25 is required at enrolment to meet the cost of course work books.
