Everyone takes photographs, and sometimes they get lucky. Taking quality photographs, however, photographs which make an impression on the viewer, even if theyre unfamiliar with the subject, requires skill and passion.

AS level Photography will allow you to develop new technical skills, exploring both traditional and digital photography. You will express your creativity as you develop a portfolio of work which could include portraiture, landscape photography, still-life photography, documentary photography, photo-journalism, experimental imagery, photographic installation or film.

You will learn how to use SLR/digital cameras, how the studio works, how to develop black and white film and dark room skills. Youll also look at the way digital imaging is used and how to use Photoshop. Throughout the year you will explore how famous/historical photographers have produced work, giving an appreciation of the processes needed to be successful. Trips to galleries and exhibitions are an integral part of the course.

Career-wise, photography offers many possibilities for employment or, more usually, freelance work, including commercial/product photography, journalism, sports photography, portraiture, including weddings and studio shots, and stock photography (selling your photographs for use in advertising or other purposes).
