This course is designed to develop your interest in the world of media, to explore why texts are made a certain way and targeted through their mode of address. In the AS year you will complete 2 units. In preparation for your exam you will study a cross section of media texts, exploring how they communicate their meanings, exploring the media’s ever-changing role in society through representations of gender, ethnicity, issues and places and analysing them through applying audience theories. For the second unit you will have the opportunity to develop your understanding of codes, conventions, messages and values of a particular format/genre through detailed research and practical work. In the second year you will look closer at the industries behind the texts and study three different industries through the exploration of nine texts. You will also have the chance to develop your area of interest through an investigation involving research, application of theory and practical production. Media Studies fits in perfectly with other humanities subjects such as Sociology or History.
