About this course

This one-year top-up degree is primarily aimed at successful HND/Foundation Degree graduates seeking to extend their studies at degree level. Three pathways are available: fine art, visual communication design and craft.

The course comprises 30 weeks full-time study, delivered over one academic year. You will benefit from school study visits, interdisciplinary seminars, access to workshops, open lectures, and a comprehensive visiting lecturer programme. The course structure provides an opportunity to develop your chosen specialist subject within a flexible and supportive framework, and to contextualise studio and workshop activities with historical and critical theory. You will also be encouraged to relate your studies to professional practice and future growth. Throughout the year our students enter (and win) design awards, initiate shows in local galleries and submit and compete professionally. You will undertake a work placement, as well as presentational and self–promotional development. Our degree shows are always ambitious and are built around entrepreneurial principles.

You will have access to the university library facilities and may attend open lectures, seminars and exhibitions at the Faculty of Arts and Architecture at Grand Parade in Brighton.

Curriculum Study Units

Entry requirements

HND/FDA 240 credits in appropriate subject area, or equivalent credits from art and design-related course. For non-native speakers of English: IELTS 6.0 overall, 6.0 in writing. Other: Interview and portfolio review. Applicants lacking specified minimum entry requirements may be assessed for additional relevant prior learning.

Career and progression opportunities

Our graduates leave equipped with the necessary skills, sophistication and focus to sustain a successful professional practice. Graduates are currently practising locally, nationally and internationally; designing, making, showing and selling their work within the local community and the wider market place. Local gallery links, design company contacts, proactive community projects and teaching opportunities are well-used by our students. Collaborative work placements have been conducted in Copenhagen.

We encourage postgraduate study at the University and elsewhere as appropriate. A recent graduate successfully gained a place at Falmouth University to study for an MA in Advertising Design and another to Lincoln University to undertake an MA in Sculpture. One of our Design students received one of the coveted Best of Show at the D&AD in London for his complete portfolio.
