Artist’s Blue-Print for Teaching Success

An art teacher has been enjoying a winning streak.  Over the past year, Ian Brown, who is the College’s Subject Leader for Fine Art, has been awarded The Prize for Contemporary Screen Print at his MA Show, and the St Barnabas Press Award at the ‘Originals’10 Show in the Mall Galleries, London.  His work has also been selected to show in a prestigious exhibition at the offices of International law firm Clifford Chance at Canary Wharf and at the Climate Change show in North Wales (also a prize-winning entry).  Now there is a possibility his prints may appear in the Volcanoes show at the Compton Verney art gallery alongside works by Andy Warhol and Max Ernst.

Ian uses second-hand, often re-worked images (for example, postcards that have been previously hand-coloured) to explore how the world is re-presented through the print process. His latest series ‘Natural Disasters’, triggered by the global financial meltdown, examines the mechanisms that influence our understanding of the photographic image.

Ian believes it is important that teachers are encouraged to achieve as professional artists as well as in the classroom. 'I have learnt a lot over the last two years, both technically and theoretically and this has fed back positively to my learners, he says. Volcano: from Turner to Warhol will be on show at Compton Verney from the 24th July to 31 October 2010.
