Rod Nelson, 56, is studying Welding part-time in his evenings at Sussex Coast College Hastings whilst in employment with TE Connectivity in Hastings.
‘I chose to study at Sussex Coast College as the engineering department had an excellent reputation and the course suited my needs.’
‘I enjoy studying here because there are industrial standard facilities and the staff are knowledgeable. The course fits around work perfectly as it is in the evenings’ adds Rod.
He plans to continue to practice and enhance his skills as a welder and hopes to start a small business producing welded products for local companies and businesses. ‘I would like to possibly look at getting my codings in welding, especially in TIG welding, as this could open up many opportunities for me in the future’ adds Rod.
Rod concludes, ‘SCCH is a very ‘hands on’ college, especially at the Ore campus, where you are given the opportunity to use industrial equipment and machinery without being restricted due to it being an educational establishment.’
‘It really gives you the experience of ‘real’ welding, due to the workshop environment, and totally prepares you for the world of work. I would recommend it to anyone who was thinking about welding either as a hobby or as a career.’
